On November 2, the National Academy of Economic Strategy of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and China Social Sciences Press jointly released the “Annual Report on China’s Urban Competitiveness No. 19: Megacities: Health Benchmark and Ideal Benchmark as a major achievement made in the innovation project of National Academy of Economic Strategy of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences” (hereinafter referred to as the Report). The Report was jointly prepared and completed by Ni Pengfei, chief researcher of National Academy of Economic Strategy of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and experts in China’s urban competitiveness.
The Report shows that the top 10 cities in terms of comprehensive economic competitiveness in 2021 are Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Beijing, Guangzhou, Suzhou, Taipei, Nanjing, Wuhan and Wuxi. Nanjing ranks 8th among China，remaining the same as last year.
From the comprehensive economic competitiveness ranking, the overall change pattern of each city has been roughly determined. The comprehensive economic competitiveness ranking of Nanjing remains unchanged compared with last year, and the leading pattern is basically stable. In addition, Nanjing also performed well in other evaluation dimensions, ranking 6th in terms of economic vitality competitiveness and 7th in terms of local factor competitiveness. In terms of soft business environment competitiveness and technological innovation competitiveness, it ranked among the top 8.
With the theme of “Megacities: Health Benchmark and Ideal Benchmark”, the Report presented a full-sample research and refinement on the current situation and characteristics, high-quality development and health, historical evolution and trend of global megacities from the central area and metropolitan area. Based on the index system and objective data, it evaluated in detail the comprehensive economic competitiveness, sustainable competitiveness and other competitiveness of 291 Chinese cities, and measured the development pattern of urban competitiveness in China as a whole.
